Poetry Festival 2024

On Tuesday 27 February, the Guildford High School English Department hosted the annual Poetry Festival. This year’s theme was ‘The Environment’ and students from Year 7-9 performed their poems in front of an audience of parents, teachers and guest judge, Dan Simpson.

Meng-Yao in Year 9 was crowned this year’s winner, here’s what she said about the evening:

‘I would like to begin by thanking our Poet in Residence, Dan Simpson for kicking off the evening with an evocative and engaging poem. The poetry festival was a motivating experience, encouraging KS3 students to express their unique opinions on climate change. The immense talent, brought by all the chosen students created a stimulating atmosphere for students and faculty alike, and resonating amongst the audience. A profound thank you goes to the English Department for hosting this extraordinary event, and another expression of gratitude to Dan Simpson for inspiring us to express our poetic voices. Just remember, “a small seedling can keep this world alive!”.’
