Michaelmas Term Senior Sport Roundup

U15 and U19 Gymnastics team crowned Surrey champions

The Gymnastics season has started brilliantly for GHS so far. Surrey tumbling was the first competition, held at Sutton High. The U13 team came 3rd and the U15 & U19 team were crowned Surrey Champions. U15 & U19 floor and vault competition was held at St Catherine’s.  They all performed beautifully on floor and vaulted powerfully. Sadly the U19 team were second by 0.1 of a mark but U15 team were crowned Surrey champions. All teams have qualified for the ISGA National finals in March.

ESAA Cross Country Cup, Junior team national champions

A very busy term for Cross Country at Guildford High. At the District Schools Cross Country trials on Thursday 14 November, our biggest cohort of 39 girls ran brilliantly with 24 GHS runners being selected for the Surrey Schools Championships.  As a result GHS won the Ed How Memorial trophy for the highest scoring school. RGS also hosted a relay event of teams of 4 over a 1km course for Years 7-9.  Our A team came 1st and our B team came 3rd overall but 1st B team, as well as fielding 3 more teams showing our incredible depth.

Having zoomed through the ESAA Regional finals with all 3 teams, we headed up to Suffolk for the ESAA National finals on 2 December.  It was an incredibly cold day with snow lining the course.  The junior girls started the day amazingly and ran their legs off on a very tough, hilly route. Individually Naomi came 3rd with Poppy close by in 6th and the rest of the team – Felicity, Jessica, Harriet and Emily finishing 10-13th places.  This made an amazing team total of 30 to be crowned national champions for the 2nd year in a row.  The inter team followed with Kitty placing 2nd and Tilly 4th individually and the team of Hannah, Keira, Sofia and Lucy placing 7th. In seniors, sadly Katie P. wasn’t allowed to race but the team of Emmeline, Robin, Millie, Amelie, Regina and Katie S. ran brilliantly to place 5th overall. This is out of 1600 schools who initially enter and 152 runners on the day.

A special mention to Katie P. who was selected to race in the U20 GB Cross Country team in Brussels, despite being only 16 years old. This is an incredible achievement. On the day Katie ran spectacularly, placing 28th individually and helping the GB team win gold! Huge Congratulations to Katie and what an experience!

Lacrosse

We are celebrating across the board success this term in our Lacrosse play. Huge congratulations to the U19 1st team for being crowned the champions and taking home the England Lacrosse School Challenge Cup for the second year in a row. Another massive win for the U18 1st Team who took home the Surrey Lacrosse Cup!

It was an U15 County Lacrosse tournament to remember! Fields flooded due to torrential rain mid play and we nearly needed to put on snorkels to continue. All three teams were competitive throughout the day and our B team finished as Plate Champions!

Swimming

We had an amazing day of swimming at the ESSA national relay finals.  GHS finished:

Junior freestyle relay – 2nd silver medallists: Felicity C., Ellie M., Zara N., Savannah SJ.

Junior medley relay – 3rd bronze medallists: Aila C., Felicity C., Ellie M., Zara N.

Horse riding success

Show jumping success for Amelie, Enoki and Emily sees them qualified for the NSEA Show jumping finals at Hickstead. Congratulations to Sofia who finished 3rd in the BE league series but since rode at South of England International and Oasby Horse Trials, at Novice U18 level (1.10m) finishing 3rd and 6th respectively. This qualifies them for International 2* competitions, which in turns means they are eligible for BE Development Pathway coaching and potential consideration for the GB team at the Pony European Championships next year.
