Grace W. was our Senior winner for the national speaking competition ARTiculation, she was selected by a panel of six teachers during our internal heat at school. She represented Guildford High School in the regional finals at The Lightbox Gallery in Woking with 6 other speakers from schools in the Southwest region. Grace spoke about the powerfully charged paintings by Paula Rego called ‘The Abortion Pastels.’

The event was adjudicated by Harriet Loffler, Curator, The Women’s Art Collection, Murray Edwards College. She praised Grace on her skillful and intellectual structure and was impressed by her excellent comparisons and explanations that placed Rego’s work in today’s context, her commentary on the power of the artist work and crucially what was missing from the paintings.

Subsequently, she awarded Grace the first prize which means that Grace will now speak at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the London heats to hopefully gain a place in the Grand Final at the National Gallery.
