Year 12 Oncology trip
A dozen keen Year 12 Biology students spent the morning at the University of Surrey to learn about cutting edge research on cancer therapy, funded by the Tropic of Cancer charity. The research centers around the role of the immune system to target an individual’s own cancerous cells. Students had hands on experience identifying cancerous cells in tissue samples, loading an electrophoresis gel and practicing other biotechnological techniques, under the guidance of lead researchers in the field and PhD students. Congratulations to Isabell G. who was the only participant who correctly identified all the organs that the tissue samples were from, and to Anna S. who’s micro-pipetting was devilishly accurate. They came away with well deserved white blood cell prizes.
