Run 5K for Charity

Claire Cornish, Class of 2000, has shared with us a virtual charity event she is helping to organise as a Runner Ambassador. The event will take place on 24 October this year and we would like to encourage our Alumni to take part! Claire has given us a description of the event, so please keep reading for more information from her.

Together, We Run

Together, We Run: The Make A Difference Day 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk is a VIRTUAL event that takes place on October 24. It celebrates Make A Difference Day, which is a day of service and volunteerism, two things that we GHS girls know a great deal about. It’s almost in our DNA after so many years of bake sales, mufti days and collections. Usually, the race is a mass participation event that takes place in roughly 25 cities across America, as well as in Australia, Canada and the UK. This year, because thanks to COVID, it is entirely virtual, there is really no limit to the number of participants that can be involved. You can take part wherever you are in the world, yet still be part of the larger Team G.H.S. if you want to.

The race benefits and celebrates small, regional or community non-profit organisations that are not generally multi-million-dollar enterprises. It is the local school, the one-person-operated book bus, the small-town animal shelter. Every participant selects an organisation close to their hearts that they would like to benefit from their participation in the race. And on October 24, each participant chooses the time and the location of their run or walk, laces up their sneakers and sets off.

Every participant receives a Finisher Medal – because we all secretly love that race bling – and a commemorative event T-shirt. This year organisers are hoping that this will be the biggest Make A Difference Day 5K yet. Although there are many charities to choose from, there are three in particular that seem to personify the spirit of the GHS more than the others and so if any of our alumni would be interested in registering to run or walk to benefit Bertha the Book Bus, the Theatre Support Fun, and Guide Dogs for the Blind please do. However, participants are able to choose their own charity to benefit with their registration fee.

Come on alumni! Let’s all do this together. It’s super simple to register – just go to the event website, and hit the link for registration. You can sign up right there and the organisers email you right back to check in, offer some tips and encouragement and to ask which organisation you are wanting to support. This is something that we can all do, together, even though we are separate, and it’s also a great way to shed some of those COVID quarantine pounds.
