Prizegiving 2019

We were delighted to welcome Sir Michael Morpurgo as Guest Speaker at our Prizegiving on 1 July. Speaking at the event in G Live, he provided sound advice to our leavers, entertained us with witty anecdotes from the earliest days of his writing career and even surprised the audience with a song!

Sir Michael Morpurgo is one of Britain’s most well-loved authors and has been a friend to Guildford High School for many years. I remember a Year 7 pupil saying to me “please could you recommend a book I’ll love as much as Private Peaceful?” It’s a tough question to answer, but a wonderful question to hear. I know that many children would name one of Sir Michael’s books as their favourite book. His books are able to transport us into different worlds; they create that magical intersection between reality and imagination in which a story feels alive to us and something fictional helps us better understand the world in which we live. We were thrilled that Sir Michael was able to join us to the celebrate many successes of our talented pupils.
