Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’

This term we once again enjoyed the creative flair of our talented Drama Department. After a very successful pantomime in the Michaelmas Term, Year 7 returned to the stage once more in their second Senior School production, Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’. Adapted for the stage by David Wood, the play had all the magic and mayhem you would expect from a Roald Dahl story. We thoroughly enjoyed the performances, with each one better than the last (if that was even possible!). Please enjoy some accounts of the experience from the cast and crew below.

Fiona Jones, Director

Year 7 students had so much fun working collaboratively to create the menace, magic and mayhem of Roald Dahl’s story ‘The Witches’ live on stage. I wanted the students to take ownership of the production and they were bursting with ideas throughout the rehearsal process. The cast embraced their bald caps and performed with power!

With help from the Technical Theatre Club, the Prop Factory Club and the Year 9 Stage Management and Costume Teams, we became a lower school theatre company. The cast and crew developed their theatre skills while making friends and memories. Congratulations to all!

Rosie Paulson, Year 7 pupil and cast member

‘The Witches’ was an amazing experience, and it was a privilege to be part of such a talented cast. The show week was so much fun and we all bonded tremendously. It was so nice to see our friends supporting us in the audience. Performing was an amazing feeling, we had worked so hard, and it was lovely to see it come together.

Joanna Lloyd, Year 9 Costume Team

All of us in the costume team have really loved the experience of designing to a director’s brief, sourcing the costumes, and becoming makeup artists. It gave us an insight into other roles within the theatre industry and gain understanding of how important crew and designers are to the success of a show. We had been working on the costumes since January, so it was amazing to see how they looked on stage at the dress rehearsal. We hope that they captured the same vibrancy as Quentin Blake’s original illustrations.

Chloe Oldfield and Emilia Moffat, Year 9 Management Team

We both really enjoyed working with the Year 7s; it was such a fun experience. We loved the whole process of working on a big production and learning about how theatre isn’t just about the actors on the stage. We developed our skills as puppeteers to bring alive Mouse Bruno and Mouse Boy. All the Year 7s were a pleasure to work with; it was really nice to meet and help the younger years.
